When Terry’s 98-year-old grandmother had a stroke in May, her life changed drastically. Caring for her beloved “Grandmom” quickly became a full-time responsibility, with Terry providing around-the-clock care.
“Every day is different. It’s been 24/7 care since the stroke,” Terry shared. “With Delaware Hospice’s help, I can finally step away for a bit to run to the grocery store or just take a moment for myself. It takes a lot of the burden off.”
Terry speaks with deep appreciation for the care team, especially her grandmother’s nurse, Lorrie. “Lorrie has been amazing. She’s my Grandmom’s regular nurse, and she’s been so thorough and wonderful.”
Knowing that medications, check-ins, and professional care are handled with compassion and precision brings Terry peace of mind.
“It’s so convenient. The team visits each week and takes care of everything. I don’t have to worry about much,” she said.
Terry plans to use Delaware Hospice’s respite care so she can go on a much-needed vacation. A vacation she has not been able to take since becoming her grandmom’s full-time caregiver. She plans to visit the Smoky Mountains with her family and utilize that time to simply relax and refresh while her grandmom rests in the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.
“That will be a blessing,” she said. “It will be amazing to know that I can go away and have the confidence that she is well taken care of. They will know exactly what’s going on with her.”
What began as a difficult decision—entering hospice care—has become a source of strength and comfort.
“It was hard at first because when most people hear the word ‘hospice,’ they think end of life or worst-case scenario. That’s just not always the case,” Terry explained. “This experience with my Grandmom has been amazing and so helpful. I would recommend Delaware Hospice to anybody.”
Through the challenges and changes, Terry has found comfort in the team’s ongoing support.
“It makes a difference to have those weekly checks on us and all the encouragement they offer. When you’re a caregiver, it’s nice to have a professional to talk with, to make sure you’re handling things the right way. Delaware Hospice is such a great resource.”
